what you need to know About Autoimmune Conditions
What is an Autoimmune Condition
In autoimmune conditions, the immune system has lost the ability to distinguish “self” from “nonself.” It can involve almost any part of the body from the brain to the gut and everything inbetween. This usually begins with a breakdown of one or more of the barrier systems of the body; the skin, the gut, the lungs, or the blood-brain barrier. As damaged tissue enters the bloodstream the immune system sensitizes to it and forms antibodies and the attack begins. Often some foreign substance has a very similar chemical configuration to a self chemical or tissue. The immune system doesn’t distinguish well between the two and begins to attack the “self”. This is common in gluten and thyroid.
Most autoimmune disorders are driven by one of two different situations. Either there has been a dysregulation of the immune system in which it loses its way, so to speak, and attacks self tissues. Or, an antigen, an immune trigger like a microorganism, an allergen, or a toxin, activates the immune system and it tries to attack the antigen but attacks the self as well.
